Steve Cates
A native of Nashville, Steve Cates has remained committed to building and developing great communities throughout the Middle Tennessee region. As a partner in Cates-Kottas Development since 1991, Steve has been the visionary behind many beautiful neighborhoods with some of the area's finest builders. In recognition of his outstanding work with Cates-Kottas Development, the company has had the privilege of developing two communities that have been featured as Nashville's Parade of Homes' neighborhoods.

An engineer by trade, Steve graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Before starting Cates-Kottas Development with his business partner, Bill Kottas, Steve managed the Civil Engineering department for Gresham Smith and Partners, one of the Southeast's largest architectural and engineering firms in the Southeastern United States.

This responsibility allowed him the opportunity to travel all over the United States in a consulting capacity providing engineering, planning and construction management for the two largest developers in the Southeast and HCA, the largest healthcare company in America.

Outside of Cates-Kottas Development, Steve is a leader on issues affecting the homebuilding community at-large. As past President and member of the Home Builders Association, Steve has worked to bring positive change in areas such as affordable housing, additional homeownership opportunities, industry small business support and preservation-focused development. In 2005 and 2006, Steve served as the National Home Builders Association Fundraising Chairman of the Political Action Committee, Chairman of Governmental Affairs, Vice-Chairman in 2007 and 2008, and is currently National Chairman.

Cates currently serves on the National Association of Home Builders Board of Directors, Federal Government Affairs Committee, Budget Committee, and Investment Committee.

Cates was Builder of the Year in 2001 and was the recipient of the Williamson County Shining Apple in 1999 for Williamson County Outstanding System Volunteer.

Locally, Steve is a member of the Nashville Ballet & Junior Achievement Board of Directors. He is also a regular participant in the House for Hope Foundation charity home auction, having twice built homes and donating lots on which House for Hope homes were built. These projects have led to over $200,000 being raised to support local charities.

Cates has served for two years on the 21st Judicial District Drug Court of Williamson County. This program is an alternative sentencing program for convicted felons struggling with deep rooted drug addictions. The Drug Court is an intensive two-year mandated program for convicted felons whose root problem is drug addiction. It is monitored by the 21st Judicial Drug Court. Many of the participants have lost everything-spouses, children, homes, jobs-due to their addiction.

Cates also serves on the United Way Board of Directors and on the Allocation Committees that determines which agencies will be supported by United Way.

Steve has served on fundraising committees for Auburn University and currently serves on the current Legends Campaign Committee amd Athletic Department Advisory Board.

Steve is a resident of Brentwood, Tennessee.
